Evon Blessing and her daughters Khadijah and Gigi were on their way from Williamsburg to Richmond Tuesday when they stopped by York River State Park. They enjoyed the views from the area around the Visitor’s Center and were successful in finding a geocache or two.  But, the ladies found something they weren’t expecting, a White-tailed deer fawn.

Unsure of the young deer’s health or safety, Khadijah came into the office alerting Chief Ranger Brad Thomas, Seasonal Interpreter Tim Beck, and myself about the situation. Though it was not an everyday encounter, it turns out that a fawn left alone hidden in tall grass is nothing unusual. Brad explained that because fawns don’t have a scent strong enough for most predators to pick up, their mothers will leave them in tall grass as they feed somewhere nearby. We were advised not to touch the newborn deer, or our scent will be on it and the mother would reject it.

Directions to York River State Park:  From I-64, take the Croaker Exit 231B. Go north on Route 607 (Croaker Rd.) for one mile, then right on Route 606 (Riverview Rd.) about one and a half miles to the park entrance. Take a left turn into the park.
